DATA & ANALYTICS

Turn your analysis into a clear business story

ApplySprig editorial · September 11, 2026

“Created dashboards using SQL and Tableau” describes an activity. To make the work useful to a hiring team, explain the question you helped answer and what happened next.

Start with the decision

What decision did the analysis support? Perhaps a team needed to prioritize a backlog, investigate declining retention, or find a reporting inconsistency. State the problem before listing the tools. Then explain how you approached it.

Be precise about causality

If your analysis informed a pricing change, do not claim it alone produced the subsequent revenue increase. You can say that you analyzed the issue, recommended a change, and supported the decision. Distinguish measured outcomes from estimates and correlations from causal evidence.

Show the quality work

Data cleaning, reconciliation, definitions, and stakeholder alignment often take more judgment than drawing a chart. A bullet about resolving conflicting metric definitions may communicate more than another tool name. Explain the consequence: more consistent reporting, a clearer decision, or fewer manual checks.

Before and after

Vague: Used SQL to improve reporting.

More specific: Rebuilt weekly operations reporting in SQL, replacing three manually reconciled spreadsheets and documenting shared metric definitions for the support team.

This is an invented teaching example, not a claim you should copy. Substitute your own project, process, and evidence.

Use a role-specific version

An operations analyst role may value reconciliation and process understanding. A product analyst role may emphasize experiments and behavioral data. Change emphasis and order without pretending you have experience you do not. Save the job description alongside the corresponding resume so you know what each version was designed to communicate.
